Nags Head Insurance Executive Named IIANC Agent of the Year
The Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina (IIANC or the Big "I") has announced that J. Fletcher Willey, Jr., CPCU, AAI, President of The Willey Agency in Nags Head, has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the state association.
The highest honor presented by IIANC, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a member of the insurance industry who has demonstrated outstanding service and contributed greatly to the insurance industry throughout his or her career. The award was presented to Willey during IIANC's 117th Annual Convention held October 26-29, at The Marriott Grande Dunes Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Willey has been in the insurance industry since 1974 when he joined The Kellogg-Morgan Insurance Agency on the Outer Banks. In 1993, he and his wife, Linda, founded The Willey Agency, which has received national recognition for being a "Best Practices Agency" several times.
A long-time active member of IIANC, Willey was president of the association in 1991-1992. Willey has also served as Chairman of the Flood Insurance Producers National Committee, an organization that advises the Federal Emergency Management Agency on issues affecting the National Flood Insurance Program.
He is recognized nationally as one of the premier experts on Flood Insurance and has testified before Congressional committees several times on related issues.
In 2011, Willey was recognized by the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America with the Sydney O. Smith Award for his 10 years of service on the Flood Insurance Producers National Council.
Willey has won numerous IIANC awards for his work for the association and industry, including receiving the Agent of the Year award in 2001, Young Agency of the Year award in 1986, and E.F. Young Award for Insurance Education in 1983.
He is also very active in his local community, having served as chairman of the Dare County Board of Education, board member and past chairman of the Board of Trustees of the College of Albemarle, former member of the Vestry at St. Andrew's by the Sea Episcopal Church, member of Oregon Inlet and Waterways Commission, and the Dare County Library Board.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Willey and his wife reside on Roanoke Island in Manteo.
